Itinerary

Day 1:

Marrakech – Imlil (1,740m) – Aremd – Tizi n'Mzik Pass (2,489m) – Tizi Oussem Village Your Azzaden Valley trek begins with morning transport from Marrakech to Imlil, the main trekking base below Mount Toubkal. After meeting your Atlas Toubkal Trek guide in Imlil and checking your equipment, the hike starts through the Imlil Valley toward Aremd and the upper trail into Toubkal National Park.

The path climbs steadily toward Tizi n'Mzik Pass (2,489m), one of the best viewpoints between Imlil and Azzaden. From the pass, enjoy wide views over the Imlil Valley, surrounding High Atlas peaks, and the route descending into the Azzaden side. After a picnic lunch on the trail, continue down toward Tizi Oussem, a traditional Berber village in the heart of the Azzaden Valley.

Spend the night in a simple local guesthouse. Facilities are basic but comfortable, with blankets, mattresses, and a warm village atmosphere. Dinner is prepared locally, and the evening is a good chance to slow down, enjoy the quiet valley, and learn about daily life in the High Atlas.

Walking time: 5–6 hours

Day 2:

Tizi Oussem – Azzaden Valley Villages – Matat Valley – Marrakech After breakfast, continue your guided walk through the Azzaden Valley, one of the most scenic valleys in Toubkal National Park. The trail passes walnut trees, terraced fields, red-earth villages, and mountain slopes that change color with the season. Depending on pace and conditions, the route can follow the valley toward villages such as Id Issa before continuing toward the Matat side.

Your guide explains local village life, farming traditions, seasonal orchards, and the role of the Azzaden Valley as a quieter alternative to the busier Toubkal refuge trail. Lunch is served along the route before the final descent toward the road access near Matat Valley, where your driver meets you for the return journey to Marrakech.

Walking time: 4–5 hours

Difficulty: Moderate Best for: hikers looking for Berber villages, valley scenery, and a quieter 2-day Atlas Mountains trek

Equipment note:

Mountain weather can change quickly, especially around Tizi n'Mzik Pass. Bring layers, comfortable hiking shoes, sun protection, and a small daypack. If you are missing poles, headlamps, rain layers, warm clothing, or other trekking essentials, ask Atlas Toubkal Trek before departure; our Imlil office and gear shop can help with available rental equipment.

Optional Toubkal combination:

This Azzaden Valley trek can also be combined with our 2-day Toubkal trek or 3-day Toubkal trek. For the combined version, we usually reverse the Azzaden route: the trek starts from Matat Valley, crosses Azzaden and Tizi Oussem, then ends in Imlil. From Imlil, you can continue toward the Toubkal Refuge and Mount Toubkal summit on the following days.
