Planning the Ouirgane to Imlil trek? Follow the four-day route through Imi Oughlad, Oussertek and Imnane, and learn what to expect from village stays, walking days and preparation.
The walk from Ouirgane to Imlil is a four-day journey across the western High Atlas. It starts among the cultivated slopes of Ouirgane, passes through Imi Oughlad and villages of the Oussertek and Imnane valleys, then finishes in Imlil. The route is about the crossing itself: a series of mountain paths, passes and village stays, without a summit climb.
This guide explains how the days fit together, what the village accommodation is like and what to prepare before setting off. For the full itinerary, inclusions and current group prices, see the 4-day Ouirgane Valley trek from Marrakech.

The Route from Ouirgane to Imlil at a Glance
- Duration: 4 days and 3 nights
- Start: Ouirgane Valley
- Finish: Imlil, with a transfer back to Marrakech
- Main route: Ouirgane, Imi Oughlad, Oussertek Valley, Imnane Valley and Imlil
- Main passes: Tizi el Bour, Tizi n’Taratine and Tizi n’Tamatert
- Accommodation: one village homestay and two local gîtes

The route links four valley areas and changes character as it moves east. The first day leaves Ouirgane’s fields for the mountain paths above Imi Oughlad. The following days cross toward Oussertek and Imnane before the final descent to Imlil. You sleep in villages along the way, so the trek feels like a continuous crossing rather than a series of day walks from one base.
Day 1: Ouirgane to Imi Oughlad via Tinzert
The first day begins in the green Ouirgane Valley and climbs toward Tinzert. After a picnic lunch, the trail continues across the mountains to Imi Oughlad, where you stay in a local homestay. The walk takes around five hours. This is a good day to settle into the rhythm of the trek: steady climbing, breaks for the view and time on paths used between mountain villages.
Day 2: Tizi el Bour, Imska and the Oussertek villages
The trail climbs to Tizi el Bour, then descends to Imska for lunch beside the river. After the break, there is another climb through rocky paths and juniper trees into the Oussertek Valley. You pass Tinoughar and Tidli before reaching Agadir for the night in a family-run gîte. The day has both an ascent and a descent, so a steady pace and comfortable footwear make a difference.
Day 3: Gliz, Tizi n’Taratine and Tiherhourine
From Agadir, the route passes cultivated slopes with barley, corn, fruit trees and vegetable plots. It climbs through Gliz to Tizi n’Taratine, at about 2,200 metres, then descends toward the Imnane Valley via Amsakrou. The night is in Tiherhourine, in a local gîte. This is a day of changing views: farmed hillsides give way to the pass, then the trail drops toward another group of villages.
Day 4: Tizi n’Tamatert and the descent to Imlil
The final day climbs from Tiherhourine to Tizi n’Tamatert. From the pass, the trail descends through trees and village paths to Imlil, where the trek ends and your return transfer can meet you. There may be time for a freshly squeezed orange juice at the pass, depending on the day’s timing. The trek can also be arranged in reverse; confirm the route and overnight plan for your dates when booking.
How Demanding Is the Ouirgane to Imlil Trek?
This is a moderate to challenging mountain walk over four consecutive days. It is not a technical climb, but the trails include sustained uphill sections, uneven ground and descents. The second day has two climbs, and the final day crosses Tizi n’Tamatert before descending to Imlil. You should be comfortable walking for several hours on successive days and carrying a light daypack.
The published itinerary gives around five hours of walking for Day 1. Walking times on the remaining days depend on the group’s pace and stops, so ask the local team for the expected schedule for your departure. Your guide sets the pace and can explain the day’s terrain before you start.
Where Do You Sleep and What Is Included?
The route has three overnight stays: a homestay in Imi Oughlad, then gîtes in Agadir and Tiherhourine. These are simple mountain accommodations, chosen for their place along the route and their connection to village life. Expect a practical overnight stay rather than city-hotel facilities.
The trek package includes transport between Marrakech and the trek start and finish, a local mountain guide, accommodation, meals during the trek and mules to carry the main luggage. Keep your water, sun protection, warm layer, personal medication and valuables in your daypack; your main bag may travel separately with the mule team.
What Should You Pack?
- Supportive walking shoes or boots with good grip
- A small daypack and reusable water bottle
- Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- A warm layer and a waterproof or windproof jacket
- Personal medication and blister care
- A headlamp and a few overnight essentials
- Trekking poles if you like extra support on descents
Pack for the mountain rather than Marrakech: mornings, evenings and exposed passes can feel cool even when the city is warm. If you need technical trekking equipment, you can check availability at our Imlil gear shop before the trek.
When Is a Good Time to Walk This Route?
Spring and autumn are often comfortable seasons for walking in the High Atlas, though conditions vary by year and altitude. In warmer months, exposed slopes can feel hot, so early starts, water and sun protection matter. In colder months, evenings are chilly and rain or snow can affect higher paths. Ask the local team about current trail and weather conditions before you travel; the guide can adapt the day’s plan when needed.
Walking Through Amazigh Villages Respectfully
The villages along the route are homes and working communities. Fields, irrigation channels and paths are part of everyday life. Greet people, ask before taking photographs, stay on the path and follow your guide’s advice around homes and cultivated land. “Berber” is a familiar term in travel searches; many people in Morocco also use Amazigh for their Indigenous identity and culture.
Is This the Right Four-Day Trek for You?
Choose this route if you want to cross the High Atlas on foot, sleep in small mountain villages and finish in Imlil without climbing Toubkal. It suits hikers who enjoy consecutive walking days and are interested in the landscape and daily life between valleys. If you would rather explore Imlil, Imnane and Azzaden on a different four-day circuit, compare the route details carefully: that itinerary starts near Matat and follows a separate path.
