Planning a Mount Toubkal trek from Marrakech? This complete 2-day program gives you a clear idea of how the experience works, from the moment you leave Marrakech until your return after reaching the highest summit in North Africa.

The 2-day Toubkal trek is the most popular option for travelers who want to climb Mount Toubkal in a short time while still enjoying the beauty of the High Atlas Mountains and traditional Amazigh villages.

Day 1: Marrakech – Imlil – Toubkal Refuge

Your journey begins with pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech in the morning. From there, you travel approximately 1h30 toward the village of Imlil, the starting point of the trek and the gateway to the Toubkal National Park.

Before starting the hike, you have time to organize your equipment. If you are missing any gear, we also provide mountain equipment rental at our office in Imlil, including trekking poles, gloves, head torches, crampons, and other essentials depending on the season.

The trek starts gradually through mountain trails and traditional villages before reaching the famous Sidi Chamharouch shrine, a common rest stop for trekkers heading toward Mount Toubkal. After lunch and a short break, the ascent continues toward the refuge at around 3,200 meters.

The refuge is where trekkers spend the night before the summit attempt. Dinner is served in the evening, and your guide will help you prepare for summit day.

Day 2: Toubkal Summit – Return to Marrakech

Summit day starts early, usually before sunrise. Equipped with head torches, trekkers begin the final ascent toward the summit of Mount Toubkal at 4,167 meters.

The climb is physically demanding but non-technical in most seasons. As you gain altitude, the views open over the vast Atlas Mountains, offering one of the most rewarding panoramas in Morocco.

After reaching the summit and enjoying time at the top, the descent begins back toward the refuge for lunch before continuing down to Imlil. Your driver then transfers you back to Marrakech in the evening.

What Is Included in the Trek?

  • Transport from and back to Marrakech
  • Professioal local mountain guide
  • Accommodation in the refuge
  • Meals during the trek
  • Mule for luggage carrying in normal conditions if the group if more than 3 people

Our goal is to make the experience as simple and organized as possible, so you can focus fully on the adventure itself.

Equipment & Preparation

One of the advantages of starting the trek from Imlil with a local team is access to mountain equipment if needed. Many travelers arrive without technical gear, especially in winter conditions.

  • Trekking poles
  • Gloves
  • Head torches
  • Crampons and shoes
  • Ice axe
  • Warm layers and accessories

This allows trekkers to travel lighter and avoid buying equipment only for a short trip.

How Difficult Is the Toubkal Trek?

The 2-day Toubkal trek is considered moderate to challenging due to the altitude and long walking hours. However, with proper pacing and preparation, it remains achievable for most active travelers.

If you prefer a slower pace and more acclimatization time, you can also explore the 3-day Toubkal trek or the scenic 3-day trek via Tamsoult.

Final Thoughts

The Mount Toubkal trek from Marrakech is more than just a climb. It is an experience that combines mountain landscapes, local culture, physical challenge, and unforgettable moments high above the Atlas Mountains.

With experienced local guides, organized logistics, and proper support from Marrakech to the summit and back, the trek becomes accessible, safe, and deeply rewarding.
